The R/V Eastern Surveyor (ES) is a unique, fully equipped, sea worthy, marine classroom for under grad and graduate students. The U.S. Coast Guard has officially designated the ES as a certified oceanographic research vessel (ORV).
The ES takes students, professors, and researchers beyond the traditional classroom into a real-world working, studying and learning experience. In preparation for actual working conditions, students are briefed on safety precautions aboard the vessel, including : location and use of personal floatation devices, fire extinguishers and general water safety. This gives young adults a taste of the responsibilities they will have when they report aboard any vessel or shore station in the future.
Additional responsibilities can be received when students use the additional equipment and services available on board the ES including: a functional laboratory, reference materials, internet access and leadership training from its professional crew, instructors and project
managers to fulfill the educational
needs .
